Fugitive Slaves
An untold number of slaves escaped to freedom by fleeing to the North, causing financial losses for their owners. In 1850, Congress passed the Fugitive Slave Act, requiring citizens to assist in the recovery of fugitive slaves. Lincoln strongly opposed the measure, believing it made Northerners complicit in an evil system.
