Defending Slavery
As the national debate over slavery intensified, many of its defenders claimed Biblical justification. The contention that blacks were elevated and “civilized” by being brought from Africa in bondage to America was central to the proslavery argument. Scores of books and pamphlets defending slavery were published in the years leading up to the Civil War.
