Co-conspirators
George A. Atzerodt and David E. Herold were more deeply involved in Booth’s conspiracy plans. Atzerodt was supposed to kill Vice President Andrew Johnson but he lost his nerve and fled to western Maryland. Herold helped plan an attack on Secretary of State Seward and met Booth in Maryland after the assassination, staying with him until federal authorities caught them. Both Atzerodt and Herold were arrested and later hung for their involvement.
