A Heroic Portrayal
A heroic painting of Lincoln’s visit to the fallen Confederate capitol on April 4, 1865 portrays the fallen president as the Great Emancipator but erroneously places him in a carriage. In reality, Lincoln walked through the streets of Richmond accompanied by a joyful crowd of recently freed slaves and loyal Unionists.
