The Apotheosis
Immediately after Lincoln’s death, printers hurriedly issued commemorative prints to honor the slain president. Indeed, this image of Lincoln, rising Christ-like from the grave, is a direct copy of an earlier print honoring George Washington but with a different head. This explains the presence of several obscure symbols, such as a Native American in front of the tomb and an American shield with too few stars.
