"In Memory of Abraham Lincoln: The Reward of the Just," D. T. Weist, 1865

The Apotheosis

Immediately after Lincoln’s death, printers hurriedly issued commemorative prints to honor the slain president. Indeed, this image of Lincoln, rising Christ-like from the grave, is a direct copy of an earlier print honoring George Washington but with a different head. This explains the presence of several obscure symbols, such as a Native American in front of the tomb and an American shield with too few stars.
