Laid to Rest
Nearly three weeks after he died, Lincoln was laid to rest at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois. Thousands of people attended the simple, somber ceremony that concluded the most elaborate funeral in American history. Lincoln’s remains were placed in a public receiving vault, visible in the center of the photograph; in 1871, they were moved to a more elaborate tomb on top of the hill, where they remain.
