A Nation Mourns
This simple statement expressed America’s profound grief at the death of Lincoln.
On Tuesday, April 18, 1865 thousands of people filed through the East Room of the White House to pay their last respects to the fallen president. The next day, Lincoln’s funeral services were held in the same room.
