African American Soldiers
A large majority of black Union soldiers were former slaves willing to fight for their freedom and the nation’s survival even though they were not citizens. But, as Lincoln wrote: “If they stake their lives for us, they must be prompted by the strongest motive — even the promise of freedom. And the promise being made, must be kept.”
