Courage in Battle
At first, black soldiers were typically assigned fatigue duty but, as the war continued, they assumed greater responsibility. For example, Battery A of the 2nd U.S. Colored Artillery fought at the Battle of Nashville on December 15-16, 1864, a decisive Union victory in which artillery forces played a major role.
